Connecting to DoIT Drives

Before Connecting to a DoIT Drive…

This is an accordion element with a series of buttons that open and close related content panels.

Connecting to a Restricted Research Drive

MacOS

  1. Open Finder
  2. Under the Go menu choose Connect to Server (or ⌘-K)
  3. Enter the server address: smb://restricted.drive.wisc.edu
  4. Log in with your NetID and NetID password
  5. Select your, or the PI’s NetID/share name for the Restricted Drive(s) you have access and wish to connect to
  6. The drive will open and be accessible in the Finder

Note: You will need to re-mount the drive each time the computer restarts, or is disconnected from the VPN and/or network.

Windows

  1. Open the File Explorer
  2. Right click This PC and choose Map Network Drive…
  3. In the Folder: field, enter \\restricted.drive.wisc.edu\PINetID, where PINetID is the NetID of the PI who owns that share.
  4. Select Connect using different credentials
    Note: If you logged into the computer with your NetID credentials, you do not need to select this option.
  5. When prompted, sign in using your NetID and your NetID password
  6. Click Finish
  7. The drive will open and be available in the File Explorer under This PC

Linux

Desktop

  1. From the sidebar in a desktop window, choose Connect to Server
  2. Enter the server name: \\restricted.drive.wisc.edu
    • Use your NetID for the Username
    • Domain Name: ad.wisc.edu
    • Use your NetID password
  3. Click Connect
  4. Choose which share you would like access

Servers

BCG can work with you to configure Biostat servers to mount DoIT Shared Drives. Please contact us if you need this done.

NOTE – for connecting to a non-HIPAA enabled Research Drive, simply replace the instances of “restricted” with “research” in the examples above to connect to a non-restricted Research Drive.

Connecting to a Shared Drive

MacOS

  1. Open the Finder
  2. Open the Go menu and choose Connect to Server
  3. Enter the server name to map: smb://bmi.drive.wisc.edu
  4. Log in with your NetID and NetID password
  5. Select the file share you wish to mount
  6. The drive will open and be accessible in the Finder

Note: You will need to re-mount the drive each time the computer restarts.

Windows

  1. Open the File Explorer
  2. Right click This PC and choose Map Network Drive…  
  3. For Folder:, enter one of the following:
    1. If you are a BMI student connecting to your named directory, enter:  \\bmi.drive.wisc.edu\BMI-students
    2. If you are BMI faculty or staff (including post-docs), enter: \\bmi.drive.wisc.edu\bmi
  4. If your machine is not a member of Campus AD (meaning you do not log on with your NetID and NetID password), Select Connect using different credentials
  5. When prompted, sign in with AD\YourNetID and your NetID password
  6. Click Finish
  7. The drive will open and be available in File Explorer with the rest of your drives.

Linux

  1. From the sidebar in a desktop window, choose Connect to Server
  2. Enter the server name: \\bmi.drive.wisc.edu
    • Use your NetID for the Username
    • Domain Name: ad.wisc.edu
    • Use your NetID password
  3. Click Connect
  4. Choose which share you would like access

For Biostat Linux servers, please contact us, and we’ll work with you to mount a shared drive.
